October 2012

HELLO AGAIN, WORLD. Wow. While there really are no words to describe what the past few days here in NYC have been like for those of us in the midst of Hurricane Sandy, to say that I am immensely grateful and lucky is quite an understatement.  If you turn the corner one block, 25th Street and essentially the rest of downtown NYC, remain in the dark, without power for the 3rd day today. Miraculously, my street was the cutoff point with those to the south losing power, and I've never appreciated electricity more than the past three days.  As someone who has seen and lived without electricity in Ghana, a third world country where clean drinking water was not an option much less electricity in the area of the country I visited, I've never imagined life without this luxury in the United States. It has served as an enormous reminder of how dependent we are, all of us, on electricity to function in everyday life.  Yes that might seem an obvious observation, but honestly it is frightening to think about how much Americans depend on electricity to function in everyday life.  And furthermore, the stark realization that Mother Nature, can and has proven she will, at any given moment, strip us of these essentials, and we must find a way to continue life as normal as possible.  It is impossible to ignore the fact that these natural disasters that used to be so rare and monumental have now become a common occurrence and we have to to address these harsh conditions, rather than ignore them.  Also, please remember if you would like to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy, you can donate to the Red Cross.

Love this video which seems to be the best so far that I've seen showing the true impact of Sandy on Manhattan and the moment the lights went out in the Big Apple, pretty incredible when you stop to think about it...
A litte Halloween inspiration.... Do ya'll have a fabulous costume in store for Halloween? Any fun plans? Would love to vicariously live through your fun plans as due to quite the chaotic week here in NYC, I'm going to make it a low key night.
{Side note: Had this ready to post yesterday on Halloween, and due to a glitch in my internet  wasn't able to post it, so better late than never, right? Hope ya'll had a very Happy Halloween!}

The {fabulous} Neiman Marcus + Target preview has arrived!  Target partnered with Neiman Marcus and 24 CFDA Designers this year on a 50-piece limited-edition holiday collection officially launching in both Target and Neiman Marcus on December 1st.  Thankfully, images from all 50 pieces in the collection have been released and I had to share with ya'll a few of my favorites.  Prices for the designer collaboration start at $8 and go up to $500, but thankfully most items are under $60, meaning you won't break the bank!  The collection has quite an impressive designer line-up including Judith Leiber, Marchesa, Tracy Reese, Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, Alice + Olivia, Carolina Herrera, Diane von Furstenberg and more... making it the ultimate in designer collaborations for the 2012, in my opinion of course! Check out the images below and find the entire 50 piece collection here.  What do ya'll think? Isn't it fabulous?

WEAREFAMILY, Friends and Family, Sale
If you haven't already, you should definitely head on over to Shopbop and stock up on those fall favorites and items on your wish list during their friends and family sale going on right now through tomorrow evening...It is the perfect opportunity to finally purchase those fabulous booties you've been eyeing for weeks now or if you're really on top of things, do some early (early!) holiday shopping.  I've been dying over these boots, the perfect burgundy clutch, and this amazing scarf. I'm also thinking it's the perfect time to stock up on my favorites, including these genetic denim jeans.

Happy Tuesday, Ya'll! Hope your week is off to a fabulous start.   Just a few images of things inspiring me this week, how delicious do these pumpkin pecan cinnamon rolls look? Yummy! You can find the recipe here.

Treat Yo' Self.. yes, I'm guilty of gifting myself (you know, To: Me, From: Me gifts!) more often than I should, and well the latest gift to myself I just had to share with ya'll.  Olive Box, founded by Grace Kang of the fabulous NYC store Pink Olive, is a recently launched subscription service for paper lovers  (I told ya'll this was too good to share!).  Based on the joy and love of good ole' snail mail, Olive Box is meant to share the love of "snail mail and paper goods of all kinds" and to reinvigorate the love over "beautiful, handwritten letters and receiving a physical gift in the mail."  I couldn't agree more with this philosophy and am so excited to receive my first Olive Box in the mail in the coming weeks. Hello, paper goodies delivered to my mailbox every month, sign me up! It really doesn't get much better than that in my book! And on a side note, a quick reminder the holidays are just around the corner, and this would be a fabulous gift idea for the paper lover on your list!

Fall Fashion Trends, Black and Blue
I am in love with the cooler weather the past few days, aren't ya'll?  It definitely has me eyeing several key pieces for fall, and I'm pretty excited to see cobalt, royal blue, electric blue, whatever you want to call it, is a must-have to add a pop of color to your fall wardrobe. I first wrote about this pop of color in the cobalt & coral post for spring fashion, and what's really great about this bright blue is that it can easily carry over from one season to another with just a few minor adjustments, making life much easier for us all! I really have my eye on these fabulous Diane von Furstenberg heels, in love with them!

Happiest of weekends to ya'll! Hope you're enjoying a fabulous & relaxing Saturday afternoon! A few favorites I've come across this week:
  • Have ya'll heard of the new site decorBase? You must go check it out and sign up to become notified when the site is up and running.  It's truly a genius concept making it a one stop shop for all of your home decorating needs.  You can read a little more about decorBase over the amazing blog, Peppermint Bliss.
  • Loving this fall skirt by Maje, isn't it perfect for the cooler weather?
  • I had to share this article, because who would ever have thought that a Postman from Waco, Texas (my hometown) would be designing Hermes scarves, I had no idea!
  • As part of the All-Star Reunion Blowout week, Good Morning America's Rachel Smith talks with the cast of Clueless and looks back over the past 17 years since the hit movie's release. On that note, um, has it really been 17 years, oh my goodness-and even more importantly, why have we not figured out a way to create Cher's closet and outfit system in 17 years? I mean her closet was amazing!
Finally, two recipes that although completely unrelated to one another are both delicious and perfect to try out this weekend.  Let me know what you think of them and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

With the number of geek chic items on my wish list rapidly growing, it only seemed appropriate to quit hoarding these fabulous finds for myself and share them with ya'll this Wednesday afternoon.  All of these on my list make your world just a little easier in one way or another and for that reason alone, they're worth investing in if you ask me.

I have to tell ya'll about my favorites from this list.  I've been a fan of Evernote for over a year now, so you can only imagine the excitement when I recently heard about the new Evernote Smart Notebook by Moleskin. This amazing collaboration uses Evernote's Page Camera feature to capture the pages of your Moleskin notebook with your smartphone or tablet, instantly transforming anything you write, sketch or draw in the notebook to digital format allowing you to save it, search it, and share it with the world.

Another lifesaving invention is the PowerStick. Next time you're about to have a total mental breakdown because your lifeline (aka iPhone or Blackberry) has run out of juice, just take a deep breath and calmly reach into your purse to pull out the amazing PowerStick.  The PowerStick, roughly the size of a stick of gum easily fitting into the smallest of clutches for your nights out, aims to replace all of your chargers with this one convenient power source, and is a lifesaver if you ask me.

Get It Now by Postmates is a genius app, which I will be downloading as soon as it becomes available in NYC, but highly recommend for those of you currently in San Francisco.  Basically, you can get anything delivered to you in under an hour.  Delivery fees start from $5 and up, with services available 16 hours a day, 7 days a week...now that's what I can the perfect lazy person app, incredible!

Do ya'll already own any of these tech gadgets? If so, would love to hear what you think of them and if they are as good as they sound! Hope you've had a good week so far!
